There are about 8 guards

guards-

1-1/8 is equal to a look of a five o clock shadow close to skin

2- 1/4 is equal to about a little longer than a one is mostly common in styles that you would get it short on the sides and spike the top or just the front or comb it down in the front

3-3/8 a little longet than a two

4- 1/2

5-5/8 this is also considerd finger length of a sisor cut

6-3/4

7-7/8

8- the longest of all the guards and Is one inch long

Hair cut question???

Most common clipper guards go to an 8. Some go to a 12(I think), but by then, you can do a haircut with scissors and get the same length. Your best bet is to show the stylist a pic of how you want your haircut. I usually tell my clients that a 5 is around finger length(depending on how wide the finger!), anything lower is shorter, anythinghigher gives you more length.
