What's an appropriate punishment for a 5 year old who shaves her brother's head?

Not all of it, because she was caught in the act. She took the scissors to it first, then got about a third of the way through with the hair clippers.

He's a mess, but I can't decide if I should laugh or get pissed off.

Problem is, his nickname is CoJack, and she claims she thought he was supposed to be bald, like Kojak- supposedly one of her friends told her that.

I think she knows better, though.

What would you do with this kid, if she was yours?

Sell her into child labor at a BoRicks or Haircrafters in Bejing.

Kids these days just don't know discipline, or the consequences of their actions.

On the bright side, looks like she has a "talent!"

It'd be even trippier to get her a job at an Army or Marine Corps training base to shave the recruits!

In all seriousness, I've got three kids. I've been where you are in some greater or lesser degree. And c'mon, man. This is basically the kind of crap that happens. Its not like she hurt him, just mishcevious so i would say whatever form of punishment you may use for general mayhem and child like fervor gone wild, would be appropiate.

Its not like you caught her selling bootleg Tom Cruise movies out of the back of your minivan.

If he is a younger brother...just let it go, he's not of school age so he won't be embarassed to be seen in public. I'm sure you disciplined her when you caught her. The hair will grow out, but the story will live forever in the family archives!!!

Thanks for bringing back some memories of my younger days!

put her on a timeout and don't laugh at the mess that she did because this will give her an idea that what she did was "funny" and she would think that it's ok to do it again because it made you laugh. show her that you were upset by what she did, and later on after her time is up, explain to her why you were upset. and explain other things as well that should be left up to the parents to decide... so she knows her limits.

also, since you are here on yahoo answers, im guessing that the incident has been long before you asked here. timeouts are usually effective when done immediately... as soon as the offense was done. otherwise, if it has been long enough already, then you put her on a timeout -- it's no use.

even as young as 5, kids need to be disciplined. i was spanked a lot when i was younger, but my mom explained to me why she spanked me... i grew up and didn't resent her for it. we're pretty close right now. i think parents fear that the kids will grow up to resent them... it's not all about spanking, but the kind of relationship you have with your children.

Kids at this age are excuse from any liabilities. Talk to her in the most convinient way that she will understande the consequences of her act. Kids are quick learner, just tell them the right from wrong and they will soon follow it.

I would put her on punishment because like you said, you think she knows better. Maybe taking away some of her privileges or some of her favorite toys would be appropriate.

First of all, TAKE A PICTURE!!!

Here's what you could say, "Jane, we are very disappointed that you did that to your brother. It makes us very sad when you choose to make wrong decisions. From now on, you may not use the scissors unless we say that you can. I would like for you to say sorry to your brother and draw him a nice picture." Good luck

I would probably giggle and have to just walk away. Kids will be kids, she wasn't doing it to be mean spirited. She thought in her ways of ways she was trying to help. I would be angry if one of my daughters shaved the others hair but I don't think I could punish her. I would just make sure the scissors and clippers are put away in a child safe cabinet and explain to her that she must never cut someones hair without mommy or daddy's permission. Hair grows back. At least boys don't look that bad with shaved heads. Good luck!

How old is the little boy, and why would he sit still to let her do it? Try the super nanny tricks, they seem to work pretty good. doesen`t matter what the crime, but if you haven`t punished her yet, its tooooo late, she is only 5. we don`t chose worse punishments, but persistent punishments for bad behavior. and its not to hurt them, but to teach them that if they do wrong they will be put in timeout, or lose toys, or what ever you choice of punishment is. but it needs to be persistent.
