Clippers and Clipping? Strip clip?

What should I expect to pay for a decent pair of clippers?

Is it cheaper to go to a barber supply and buy them there?

I want to do a strip clip, which is one thin line down the neck and under the belly. I've been told you do NOT need to blanket with this clip, is this true?

Is a strip clip OK for light to moderate winter work?

How much hair should be left in the clip line, how long should it be? I'm assuming clipping down to the skin would dry it out/put it at risk of frostbite?

You all will think I'm nuts but I only use cheap Wahl clippers from Walmart....I've tried expensive, real expensive clippers. The blades wear out and you spend a fortune sharpening them. I have one set of $35 clippers, Wahl brand, that I have used to body clip for - get this - 20 years! The blades cost about $20 each and I've had the same set on for about three years now. They are disposable blades too, no sharpening.

I strip clip for the winter, the chest, heart girth, saddle area. I clip on the longest setting so that there is about1/2 inch of hair left...I have to do it a few times over the winter but leaving the hair longer means I don't have to blanket.

Flowbee is a really awesome tool...cut your hair at home with it and a vacuum cleaner attached to it.

The clippers should be Oster or another brand of animal clipper. Basic animal clippers will run you aproximately $130 -$150 us dollars. Equine clippers will be a bit more. I like the Oster A2 Equine clippers because they run well and stay cool longer than the basic Osters.

The blade used should be no finer than a #10. You risk clipper burn if you go shorter, especially on light colored skin.

The style of clip that is best for the average working winter horse is the hunter clip, trace clip or full body clip.

All these styles will require blanketing depending on your horses living conditions.

Here is some basic info that might be useful to you:

1) I love my Oster A5, I think I paid around 180 for them.

2) I haven't ever checked into that. I bought mine through Country Supply or Valley Vet, I can't remember which one.

Thats all I know sorry I don't do that strip clip so can't say anything on it.

I use a comb clip on my guys, where I take the fur down to 1/2 in for winter. I show them with this too. Theres a comb attachment I have for my clippers that takes the hair to the needed length.
